I am so pleased to see someone remind the world of this loss of meaning in a perfectly good, and indeed useful, phrase. Personally, I am tired of screaming “No, it doesn’t!” when someone says, “that begs the question” and getting puzzled looks from everyone in the entire restaurant. Getting thrown out of the restaurant seems to me an overreaction, but that’s a question for another day.
